Tripura University is a central university and the main public government university of Tripura, India, with a motto of “Pursuit of Excellence”. Established in 1987 through the Tripura University Act, it was created on the grounds of the Calcutta University Postgraduate Centre (CUPGC). The university is located in Suryamaninagar and offers academic affiliations in various fields, including English, Bengali, Kokborok, and Hindi. The history of higher education in Tripura dates back to the establishment of Maharaja Bir Bikram College (MBBC) in 1947, which was the first degree college in the state and affiliated to Calcutta University (CU). This was followed by the establishment of Ramkrishna Mahavidyalaya in 1950, Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar College (formerly known as Belonia College) in 1964, and Ramthakur College in 1967, all affiliated to CU. 

In 1967, the University Grants Commission (UGC) sanctioned a postgraduate wing of CU, named Calcutta University Postgraduate Centre (CUPGC), which was established in 1985. Finally, in 1987, Tripura University was established, marking a significant milestone in the development of higher education in the region.
